Root Planing and Scaling

At Dental Care at Dr. Phillips, we offer deep cleaning dental services, including root planing and scaling. Scaling involves removing dental tartar from the surface of your teeth, while root planing consists of smoothing the surfaces of the root and removing any infected tooth structure. These measures help to fight against gingivitis, a generative disease which, if left untreated, will cause considerable gum and tooth deterioration. Tartar and plaque on the teeth create an environment where bacteria thrive and multiply, which is why we sometimes have bleeding and inflamed gums. At an early stage, gingivitis can easily be treated by our staff with polishing and scaling. If left untreated, the condition will get worse and the roots will need to be planed.

As non-surgical procedures, scaling and planing are performed without anesthesia. While the procedures are typically painless, patients with advanced stages of gingivitis may need to have the area numbed for complete comfort. These procedures are usually broken up into different appointments, one for each section of the mouth. This allows you to completely heal, and reduces the time needed for each appointment.
