Crowns

Dental crowns, also known as caps, are coverings that encase the entire surface of a tooth, ultimately restoring the tooth to its original size and shape. A dental crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations. A dental crown may become necessary or desired, for one or more of the following reasons:

  • Fractured or broken teeth
  • Aesthetic appeal
  • Teeth that have decayed
  • Fillings that are large or have become fractured
  • Preparation or treatment for root canal therapy

Dental crowns are customized and made to match your natural teeth in shape, size, and color. This is done to both restore the functionality of your teeth and to provide the finest cosmetic outcome for your smile.

Procedure

The procedure to get your crown usually takes place during two appointments. The first appointment consists of taking several accurate molds that will be used to help create both a temporary crown and your final, porcelain crown. Once the molds have been taken, your permanent, porcelain crown will be custom-made in a dental laboratory, a process that typically takes about two weeks. During this two-week time period, you will wear a temporary crown. To prepare you for the temporary crown, Dr. Bhanji will numb the tooth and clean away any decay. Your tooth will be properly shaped to accurately fit the crown.

At your second dental appointment, the temporary crown is removed. Dr. Bhanji will prepare the tooth for your porcelain crown by once again carefully cleaning your tooth. The new crown will be precisely placed to ensure that your mouth will once again have full functionality. We invite you to schedule a dental consultation with Dr. Bhanji today to learn more about how crowns can enhance your smile.
