TMJ Treatment

TMJD (temporomandibular joint disorder) refers to the group of disorders that affect the joint that joins the jaw to the skull (temporomandibular joint, or TMJ). TMJD often results in pain, discomfort, earaches, migraines, and jaw difficulties. There are many different causes of TMJD, including, but not limited to:

  • Trauma to the TMJ or jaw
  • Misaligned bite
  • Arthritis
  • Stress
  • Grinding of the teeth
  • Jaw clenching
  • Dislocation
  • Poor posture
  • Disease or illness

Some symptoms of TMJD are surprising and seemingly unrelated. These include:

  • Pain or soreness in the jaw, particularly during specific times of the day
  • Popping or clicking noises when the mouth is closed and opened
  • Problems chewing and/or opening and closing the mouth
  • Bite misalignment
  • Earache and toothaches not caused by infection or other dental health problems
  • Pain in jaw when biting, yawning, chewing, or speaking
  • A ‘locked’ or stiff jaw when biting, yawning, chewing, or speaking
  • Recurring tension headaches or migraines, especially if present when you awake
  • Changes to your bite
